Waterfront Ride - Sunday afternoon, August 3rd, 2003

A walk around the Wellington waterfront is a pleasant way for us to enjoy a sunny Sunday afternoon. Alternatively we can bike the route at a leisurely pace - bearing in mind the many pedestrians we'll encounter along the way.

And that's how we spent an hour or two on a recent Sunday afternoon. Setting out from near Frank Kitts Park, three of us cycled and one walked the dog. The first photo below, looking across the water, was taken from the back side of Te Papa.

Along the way we'll pass a number of "crocodile bikes" - the green four-wheelers seen in some of these photos. (Click here for more details).

The setting featuring watercraft in the foreground and the monastery and hillside housing in the back- ground, as in the third photo, is particularly nice.

From there we go to the beach at Oriental Bay, substantially roomier now that several thousand tonnes of Golden Bay sand have recently been shipped in to add to its size. The first shot in the third row features a sign in regard to that, but the print might be a little small to read.

After another 10-15 minutes it's time to turn around and start heading back. The whole sweep of the beach (third shot, third row) presents a nice view. And beyond the fountain the interisland ferry can be seen (middle shots, row four) heading away from Wellington, traversing the very pleasant harbour.
