Neighbours' Weekend in Tawa

Peterhouse St (upper)

Held on Sunday 18th March, 2012 at 12.30pm

An enjoyable 'Upper' Peterhouse St BBQ was held a week early attended by 5 families and 3 individuals; 22 people in total. (18 houses were given invitations). It was interesting that the first 5 families/individuals to arrive included teachers, three of whom had taught at Tawa College.

Being new to the street, it was a great opportunity to meet neighbours who we hadn't had the opportunity to speak to before for an extended period of time. In the 'town' like environment of Tawa, it is not hard to find areas of commonality with unknown neighbours.

It was interesting to learn a little of the history of the area. Especially interesting was the change in demographics of the street over the last 15 years with fewer young families living in the area.

Further opportunities were considered: another BBQ when new residents move into two recently vacated houses, fireworks in the street, and a shared Christmas event (a long way off) to catch up about holiday comings and goings and offer ways to assist neighbours who are travelling away.

Many thanks to the organisers of the initiative, both locally and nationally.
