Tawa Emergency Awareness Day - Saturday March 3rd, 2007

Finding out how to deal with emergencies, both big (like an earthquake) and somewhat smaller (like a fire on the stove or basic first aid) - the community was invited to come and to be educated/informed at Tawa Junction this past Saturday 10am-2pm. The Tawa Fire Brigade, Wellington Free Ambulance, the SPCA, Civil Defence, and the Coastguard, etc were all scheduled to take part in demonstrations and static displays. The event was supported by WEMO (Wellington Emergency Management Office).

The photos below capture something of the occasion. The second pic shows how not to put out a fire in a pot on the stove - don't try and extinguish it with water. Cover the pot with a very wet tea towel, then put the lid on top of the wet tea towel, then dial 111 (even if the fire appears to be out)!

The next pics are action shots of fire extinguishers in use. The remaining ones are more-or-less self-explanatory.

Alan Wickens took the last three photos. The earlier ones are Malcolm Sparrow's.
