There have been a number of tuis and kereru in parts of Tawa lately, and another not-especially-timid member of the native bird family is the fantail, smaller than the others and which flits around quite close to humans at times, never in one place for more than a few seconds. Pleasant company when one is outside.

The photo below was taken less than half-an-hour after the above was written, when I stepped onto my first-floor balcony and heard the distinctive 'peep peep' sound of a fantail in the nearby tree. They're a very friendly little bird!
