Wellington's Phoenix football team played its first A-League match at the Stadium on Sunday, 26th August, 2007 against Melbourne. A parade of various junior clubs from the Wellington region took place prior to kickoff, including Tawa representatives as seen above.

Melbourne went 2-0 up before the home team came back in the latter stages of the match, much to the relief of 14,500 fans, to draw 2-2. In the circumstances it almost seemed as good as a win!
