25 Tawa College students will be going to China for two weeks in the April school holidays next year - under the supervision of a group of teachers from the Mathematics Department. As part of their fundraising efforts, they held a Xmas Raffle which was drawn last evening, 10th December 2010. The above photo shows Malcolm Sparrow (Tawa Community Board Chair) drawing the winning ticket, ably assisted by, from left, Matthew Hughes (Year 12) and Michael Lester (Year 11), both Tawa College students who will be part of the China trip.
The students are going to explore Mathematics - the history and the use of Mathematics on a more global scale, as well as gaining an understanding of the culture of China. The abacus was invented by the Chinese who also independently developed negative numbers, place value decimal systems, a binary system, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

The students of Tawa College wish to thank the Tawa community for supporting both the Xmas Raffle and recent Garage sale.
