Taking you for a Ride
Friday, November 29th, 2004

Preamble:  We were scheduled to go to a mystery destination a few kilometres north of Tawa where we would be 'taken for a ride'. Unfortunately a cold southerly had hit Wellington about 24 hours before our Friday evening programme and the wind was still rather strong and miserable, even though Friday afternoon had actually seen the sun shining. Anyway the decision we'd made earlier in the day was to re-schedule the event to St Francis Xavier School hall (as the Baptist Church hall wasn't available). We met for starters in the Baptist Church carpark and the kids were 'taken for a ride' for 1-2 kilometres on the bus (and in cars) from there to the St Francis hall.

The event:  Six teams (37 kids) took part in six different challenges/events, four minutes for each. When the whistle blew, each team moved on to the next challenge: sucking up a pebble (sweet) onto the end of a straw and moving it from one container to another a couple of metres away; throwing a small frisbee into a bucket; kicking a soccer ball into a cardboard box goal; shooting a netball into a hoop; running around the outside of the hall as many times as possible; finding answers in a newspaper to a bunch of questions. Points were awarded at each event for 'successes achieved'. And the winning team overall was ... well, we'll come back to that shortly.

A short excursion:  We decided we would go for a ride after all, although not the one we'd originally planned. The final part of the evening saw us heading off on the bus (and cars) to Johnsonville where all 44 of us (including leaders) descended on McDonald's for a pack of large fries each. By then it was time to head back to the Baptist Church carpark where mums & dads (and cuzzie bros) were waiting.

The winning team:  Each of the six kids in the winning team has won a bar of chocolate - as shown in the pic below. To find out who the winning team is, you'll need to click on a certain point on the chocolate bar. You need to work out for yourself where that particular spot is - come on, play our silly game!
