McKeefry Grove

Held on Sunday 24th March, 2013

We finally held our street BBQ (second attempt) this Sunday afternoon at 4.40pm - through till darkness closed in. The weather was fine and a great contrast with the previous Sunday.

We have 20 homes in McKeefry Grove (19 occupied). 14 of the homes were represented at the party, with 25 adults and 19 children. It turned into an international affair, with four Japanese students (billeted with two street families) and a Japanese friend of one of the children, plus two newcomers to the street from Singapore and China. One of the other children was originally from India. The 25 adults included two relatives visiting one of the residents.

The first photo shows most of those attending, though most of the children were milling around playing until the food became available. The second photo shows four little girls who were taking their meal VERY seriously! We must have kept them too long waiting for the BBQ.

Co-organiser Peter and I talked about the need for self-dependence and mutual aid, and recommended everyone has water, food, gas, etc, for keeping themselves going for at least three days should there be a disaster.

I have added email addresses to the street list this year so each household can contact other occupants or some other nominated helper should anyone notice anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks to Peter for providing 2 BBQs and for him and his two helpers for doing the cooking. It seems everyone would like to do it again next year, but perhaps a bit earlier, perhaps in February.
