THE BIG MATCH IN 2003

Saturday May 3rd at the Westpac Stadium, Wellington

Hurricanes
v
Brumbies

The Hurricanes are currently 2nd on the Super 12 table!

April 13th: the Hurricanes started their 2003 season with two losses, but have now won their past 6 matches (a record for consecutive wins). They're currently sitting on 29 points, one point behind the Blues and 3 ahead of the Crusaders. However they have played one more match than both of those teams, and the road ahead in their final 3 matches is far from easy.

This coming week (April 19th) they take on the fourth-placed Highlanders who often don't play as well when they're away as they do at home. We'll put our money on the Hurricanes winning that match.

Update (April 20th): They did win that match and in a rather convincing fashion, 37-15. They were behind, 9-15, at half-time, but scored 31 points in the second half to maintain their second place on the table and increase their winning run to 7 consecutive matches. On 34 points they're still one behind the Blues and 4 ahead of the Crusaders. The Hurricanes have a bye this coming weekend, which could see them drop to third place if the Crusaders win their away match in South Africa.

The Hurricanes' last round robin match (May 10th) is against the Blues in Auckland. This is one the Canes might be lucky to win. The Blues are doing very well this season, they'll be playing at home, and they are the one team the Hurricanes have never beaten in the Super 12! Having said that, we'd absolutely love it if the Hurricanes did beat the Blues in this the Hurricanes' best season so far!

THE BIG MATCH: The Hurricanes take on the Brumbies on May 3rd in their second-to-last round robin match. This is the big match in 2003 as far as we're concerned. 65 of us (44 kids and 21 adults) are heading in to the Stadium as part of a Club Intermed outing from Tawa to see them take on what has traditionally been one of the best teams in the Super 12. The Brumbies are in 6th place as at April 13th (4th place as at April 20th, 5th place as at April 26th) and will be working hard to secure or maintain a spot in the final four. The Hurricanes have been victorious in their past two clashes with the Brumbies and we're counting on them winning again. And we'll be there to see it happen!

Listed below are the results of the Hurricanes' Super 12 (round robin) matches against the Brumbies over the years, the Hurricanes' score shown first:

Previous years haven't been too flash

Up to this point, the Hurricanes' best year was 1997 when they ended up third in the round robin. Other years have seen them finish consistently in the bottom half of the table as shown below:

A winning team in 2003 !!!

The 2003 season is going well for the Hurricanes - they're right on course for a spot in the semi-finals. If they win one or, better still, two of their remaining 3 matches (and that's quite likely), they'll secure a "final four" placing. The recipe then is simple. Win their next two matches at that point and they will end up Super 12 Champions in 2003!
