'June Tunes', 'Beat the Winter Blues', and 'November Notes' all grew out of what were, and in fact are still referred to as 'Monster Listen Ins'. Roy Tankersley, Tawa College's former HOD of Music, began them as a concert for students to have their first chance to perform in front of an appreciative audience of family and friends. It is in a very real sense an all-comers group of performers, from youngest to oldest, and most experienced to least experienced. It is the sort of concert where 'Role Models' are set up. Students relate to and appreciate the growing talents of their peers, whether older or younger.
Over the years these 'Monster Listen Ins' have become so big that the College has had to divide them up into smaller concerts to cater for all the groups eager to perform.
Tawa College is blessed with a wonderful group of Itinerant Music teachers, as well as its own dedicated music staff. It has been wonderful to see the way in which these tutors have given voluntarily of their time to develop their own instrumental ensembles.
We are also grateful to the Private Tutors in our community, who support the students they teach, by attending concerts, fostering the technical skills of the students they teach, and on several occasions also offering financial support, in the purchasing of musical instruments.
