The re-opening of the library

It was Saturday morning, November 23rd 2002, and the Mayor of Wellington, Kerry Prendergast (a former Tawa Borough Councillor), officially opened the refurbished Mervyn Kemp Library. This was followed by various activities and performances through to the afternoon - as seen in the shots here. [Click on the thumbnails to enlarge].

Various speeches took place before the library was officially re-opened by the Mayor, Kerry Prendergast. The library was originally constructed in 1974. Six different speakers (including the local Vicar, the Salvation Army officer, and the chairman of the Tawa Community Board) took turns addressing the audience.
The library is named after Mervyn Kemp who was Mayor of Tawa for 28 years (1955-83). Here his wife is carrying out the official "cutting of the cake". Queen B and the Hornets were one of the singing acts which followed the opening speeches.
Maiden Tawa, the girls' choir from Tawa College, also sang (albeit 20 minutes before the scheduled time, thus missing being photographed for this page). One of their members is shown here. The Musical Island Boys, a very successful Barbershop Quartet from Tawa College, performed various numbers.
Ngaire Best, a local city councillor, awarded prizes for the decorating of the Christmas tree. Five different groups of dancing girls entertained the crowd inside the library.
More of the dancers. Finishing the dance.
The Madrigals, the highly-rated choir from Tawa Intermediate, rounded off proceedings with six songs. About half of the choir is shown in this photo. A hoedown number.
The Madrigals in action again. An appreciative audience.
