NATIONAL AWARD FOR TAWA COMMUNITY !!! [May 2013]
Tawa Community Board won the "Enhancing Communities" award at the nation-wide community boards' biennial conference in Wanaka this month. Around 200 delegates representing New Zealand's 116 community boards gathered together to share ideas and to listen to a range of inspiring speakers including Sam Johnson, the "earthquake boy" from Christchurch.
Community boards from around the country were invited to submit in advance their entries for the "Community Boards Best Practice Awards" which "recognise excellence in the implementation of projects and initiatives in local governance". A winner is chosen in each of three categories.
Neighbours' Day in Tawa has been such a successful project in the local community - involving around 50 street get-togethers in March 2012 and again in March 2013 - that the Tawa Community Board submitted an entry for that initiative.
It is a huge honour for the Tawa community to win the award considering the high quality of the various entries from throughout New Zealand. It wouldn't have been accomplished without the many locals who organised barbecues (or similar gatherings) in their own streets in conjunction with Neighbours' Day Aotearoa. Local Neighbourhood Support and the Lions Club of Tawa have also been involved in the success of the Tawa event.
A great community effort. Well done Tawa!
