Friday nite fun for Year 6-8s

TAWA, NZ

PAST EVENTS

2006

December 15th - 2006 Finale
We started by making a bunch of Christmas cards for the residents at Tawa's Longview Home, many of which (the cards, that is) looked superb. This was followed by a 'fast-paced' team relay before we moved into the church to do a Christmas-related activity and hear a short talk about Christmas. Back into the hall where we welcomed a special visitor in a red suit who dished out a litle gift to everyone. The evening finished with another boisterous relay, rounding off another good year at Club Intermed.

December 8th - Farewell for Year 8s
We met at Robyn's place at 6.30pm, and once the 'pizza boy' arrived with his ten packages, we got stuck into the food. That was followed by a variety of games including the 'chocolate game', the water balloon catch outside, 'pass the parcel' which gave each 'winner' the choice of a 2-piece chocolate bar or a challenge to meet, and a 'music snippets' game organised by ex-Club Intermeder, Nicola. 20 Year 8 kids were there, all bar two (as far as we know) will be heading off to Tawa College next year.

November 24th - Barbecue at Brasenose
We actually managed to have a scheduled outdoor event outdoors! Just over 30 youngsters turned up to eat barbecued sausages, to look for a dozen cans of Coke hidden in the bush, and to take part in a few contests like the "water balloon catch" (a good old favourite), a water container relay, and a tug-of-war. In between times the kids had the super-size ball and various playground equipment to keep themselves entertained. The evening finished with a semi-dark stroll through the bush to Achilles Close, and back along the street.

November 10th - Tawa Recreation Centre
It was an evening of fun for all 38 kids and 8 leaders at Tawa Recreation Centre (Tawa College).

October 27th - Taking You for a Ride
We were meant to head up to Aotea Lagoon for the evening, but the miserable weather meant a change in plans. Instead we took everyone up to the Porirua Aquatic Centre. There were only 18 of us, not including leaders. The smaller number was due, as far as we can make out, to the Redwood School disco being on the same night, 5 or 6 kids being involved in summer sport, and some who didn't come because they'd just arrived home very tired from their Intermediate camp. We rounded off the evening by piling into McDonald's at Porirua for a soft serve cone (each) on the way home.

September 15th - 10-pin Bowling and More

September 1st - It's in the Box
It was a choice of the Pebbles or the prize in the box, plus a few surprises/challenges along the way. 40 kids took part.

August 18th - DVD nite
This was a last-minute change from our scheduled programme. "It's in the Box" was supposed to have been this night, but ill health on the part of the organiser meant it was postponed.

August 4th - Food 2 Go
We took the train in to Wellington and visited 3 burger joints (a bit of a walk between one and the next), eating a small amount at each.
45 kids on the night.

July 21st - Ballon Bash
Water balloons, giant balloons, regular balloons, odd-shaped balloons, heaps of 'em. It was an evening of fun and games at the hall.

June 30th - A Bit of a Dag
A few games in the hall.

June 16th - Just Desserts
For details and pics, click here.

June 2nd - Slightly Gross Games
We had a few 'slightly gross' games in the hall. The team games were alright, but the gross (or slightly gross) ones only involved a few volunteers at a time while the others watched. 36 kids there.

May 19th - Grub on the Trot
A three-part feed - we had different 'courses' at three different homes in Tawa, with a short walk between one place and the next. 41 kids on the night.

May 5th - Games in the Hall
It was meant to be our yearly 'Streets of Tawa Quest'. However it was cold and unpleasant on the day, it had rained in the morning and the chances of it raining again later in the day were 'high'. As it turned out, we did see rain in parts of the evening.
'Plan B' was a few games in the hall. These included 'Remember the Items on the Tray', 'Musical Chairs' and 'Midnight'. It was a noisy and boisterous evening with 40 kids taking part.

April 29th - Stadium Outing
We booked exactly 100 seats several weeks before the big match - Hurricanes v Chiefs at the Stadium. Just under half of those were Club Intermed kids themselves. More about this along with a few photos shortly.

April 7th - Eggs 'n' Crosses
Games & activities at the hall - with an Easter theme. 49 kids on the night.

March 24th - Chocolate Lovers' Nite
For details and pics, click here.

March 10th - In the Commonwealth
We'd been hoping to go to the beach, but summer seemed to end fairly abruptly at the end of February and warm beach-type evenings were no more. We ran a programme based around the upcoming Commonwealth Games instead. Seven teams of 5 kids (named after various Commonwealth nations - Australia, Canada, Great Britain, India, Kenya, New Zealand & South Africa - went from one activity to the next, accumulating as many points as possible within a five minute timeframe. Those activities included batting a balloon around a marker (as many times as possible within the five minutes allowed), carrying a tennis ball on a teaspoon around a marker, transferring 'Pebbles' (using straws) from one saucer to another about three metres away, throwing small wood-blocks into a bucket, kicking a ball into a goal, running a 150 metre circuit, and filling a bucket with water one cupful at a time.

Sad to say, the New Zealand team came last, and Australia came first!

February 24th - Wet at Willowbank
We started and finished at Willowbank, and most of the 45 kids who were there got pretty wet in between times. There was no avoiding it - most brought their water guns, we had a rather large supply of water bombs on hand, as well as 30 or so buckets. Had to make good use of the river, didn't we? You can see a few photos on the Pics page.

February 10th - The Great Outdoors
We didn't get to go outdoors, because it rained! For details and pics, click here.
